Anime Aboveground
Supporting the animators, writers, and artists of anime

Assignment 6

There are a couple of different categories of sites that I would consider overlapping my content space. These include anime news sites, anime databases, anime blogs, and anime networking sites such as forums. Many of them contain a lot of good information, and I will source my website from them. But, most of the information I am looking for is not very accessible. My main advantage will be easily accessible information that will be all gathered together and all relevant to the goal of promoting better as well as legal methods of anime distribution.

Anime News Sites

AnimeNewsNetwork
Anime News Network contains a lot of editorial articles, news articles, and a large anime database. I use it a lot to keep up with news as well as use it for looking up information. I will be using some news articles from ANN for my website as examples of current trends in the anime industry. I think that ANN is a strong competitor against my website in terms of information provided and rapid, constant updates, but I will focus on the distribution of anime with information that is not easy to find within ANN.

Anime Databases

AnimeSuki
AnimeSuki is a website that lists torrents only for unlicensed anime, and usually takes down links once a series becomes licensed. This website is commendable for adhering to the rights of license holders and maintaining a large and constantly updated database. It is a competitor in terms of anime distribution, since it provides a lot of anime easily accessible. But, it does not really go against the message of legal anime, since it only lists unlicensed shows. I think that overall, it is beneficial to the anime industry since it brings anime to a larger audience by making it easier to get. I also think that there isn't much informative content on AnimeSuki, just a database.

Anime Blogs

Anime Almanac
This is a blog by Scott VonSchilling, a resident of Princeton, New Jersey, with articles and editorials about anime, manga, the industry, and the otaku culture in America. His articles are very well written and thoughtful. He has written a few times about the topic of fansubs and other methods of anime distribution, so I will be using some of his articles. But, blogs are not very easy to browse, so I will try to lay out my relevant information with more visible methods.

Canned Dogs
This is a blog by zepy, who I think lives in Japan. At least, he is proficient in Japanese and traverses Japanese news sites frequently. He posts about notable anime and related media's news in Japan in English and occasionally writes longer articles about the industry. These articles are very informative and useful to the English-speaking audience since he usually translates a lot of information straight from Japanese sources. I will be using some of these for my website. Again, even though there is a wealth of cool and informative articles on his blog, the blog's format does not allow for easy accessibility to all the information he has. Therefore, I will be taking the relevant information on his blog and tie it together to build a bigger picture on my website.
